Inpatient Units
Inpatient care for pediatric cardiology patients and cardiac surgery patients takes place entirely within the Stanford Medical Center. Lucile Packard Children's Hospital is part of Stanford Medical Center, and LPCH is connected to Stanford University Hospital on all levels. Labor and Delivery and the newborn nurseries are in SUH but directly adjacent to the Neonatal Intensive Care unit which is in LPCH. Similarly, the operating rooms are in SUH but directly adjacent to the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit and the Pediatric Intensive Care unit in LPCH. Newly diagnosed infants with heart disease are admitted to the NICU, and often come by helicopter that lands on the roof of LPCH. Post-operative cardiac surgical patients are cared for in the CVICU, move to an Intermediate Care unit on 3-West, and eventually out to the regular cardiology ward on 3-West. Medical patients are cared for in the NICU, PICU or on 3-W as appropriate. Support services such as the echocardiography laboratory, pediatric radiology, and the inpatient pharmacy, are all physically very close, within 1 or 2 floors of the in-patient units.
